Now, we all know the reason why we are here: to find out the answer to one unsimple question:

What the hell is going on?

Based on the truly incredible amount of feedback I’ve received, I know many of you have been following the story, and you have… questions. But you already understand the fundamentals at this point.

There was once a social media platform called Twitter. Elon Musk acquired it and turned it into X. Three years later, Twitter is back. Kinda. Except now it’s called tweet.app.

Meanwhile, and for reasons that remain unclear, there is now a fictional blue bird, and it’s loose on the internet.

The bird’s history is currently unknown. Its intentions are believed to be benign and non-hostile. Nobody knows exactly where it is going, what it is going to do next, or what any of us are supposed to do about it.

This includes the bird.

So that should bring everyone up to speed.

Now, for the bad news: I’m the person who is going to have to explain all of this to you in a semi-coherent manner.

Because I was there. I have the emails. I have the documents. I have the photographs, text messages, court filings, memories, and approximately three years’ worth of stories and evidence that all of this actually happened, and importantly, continues to happen today. And even more importantly, will continue happening tomorrow.

And somehow, I’m still not entirely sure how a lot of this happened. I have questions and concerns too!

But I’m going to do my best, so bear with me. We’re all going to go through this together and hopefully come out the other side in one piece.

This newsletter is my attempt to explain the story behind #FreeTheBird: how we got here, what happened along the way, why there is now a social media platform known as tweet.app, how a fictional blue bird got loose on the internet, and apparently an entire digital Bird’s Nest devoted to figuring it all out.

It is one of the funniest, strangest, and most absurd stories I could ever tell.

I only know it’s true because it has been my life for the last three years.

And I want to make something clear from the beginning: this story isn’t just about me.

It’s about you, dear reader.

I’m going to tell you a story. What you choose to do with that story is entirely up to you.
